KAMPALA The opposition Forum for Democratic Change has named Buganda's Prince Vincent Kimera one of its four vice chairpersons.

The party was last evening still filling other positions on its interim line-up.
However, the party has already agreed on several names, especially those dealing with the chairman's office.

The chairman is Dr Kizza Besigye, exiled in South Africa.
Maracha MP Alex Onzima is the other vice chairman, representing northern Uganda.

The vice chairperson position for eastern Uganda is down to between Bugabula South MP Salaamu Musumba and Soroti Woman MP Alice Alaso.

Meetings, jockeying and lobbying have been going on all week to agree on how to share out leadership positions ahead of a key transitional national council meeting today.

The position of chairperson for western region, expected to be a woman, had also not yet been filled by yesterday afternoon.

Mr Eriya Kategaya and Dr Sulaiman Kiggundu have been appointed envoys to market the party in Uganda and abroad.

Sources said that a meeting on Friday night at Kiggundu's home in Kololo had come up with the names for the interim leadership to be presented at the party launch on February 18.

The FDC detailed its transitional national council to have a final list after the meeting at the party's new offices in Najjanankumbi today.
"We expect about 250 members," said Mr Reagan Okumu, a key FDC member.

Each of the three groups in the merger - the Reform Agenda, the Parliamentary Advocacy Forum and the National Democrats Forum - proposed names of the people they want as interim leaders.

Hard bargaining was going on all yesterday to strike a balance in gender, regional and religious aspects.
The most contentious positions are reported to be those of party president, presidential candidate, secretary general and treasurer.

Hitherto, three co-chairmen - Augustine Ruzindana, Sam Njuba and Chapaa Karuhanga - have been leading FDC.

Last week, former chief spy David Pulkol said he would not stand for any top leadership position in FDC although several of its members such as Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu and Mr Wafula Oguttu have expressed interest.

During a meeting on Tuesday, prominent members Kategaya, Ms Joyce Ssebugwawo, Prof. Kanyerezi, and Mr Kagulire Ssebowa declined to take any frontline positions.

Today's meeting at Najjanankumbi is also expected to discuss the need for harmony within its ranks, a policy document and also raise its flag.
