Missile dealer 'killed'
By LINCOLN WRIGHT 20feb05 AN Australian businessman paid with his life for selling stolen nuclear missiles to Iran, according to his family and a Ukrainian police report. The allegation is that Sarfraz Haider was killed for selling at least six Russian Kh-55 cruise missiles to the Islamic regime. Mr Haider, 53, an Australian citizen of Afghan-Iranian origin, lived in Canberra and Sydney before moving to London and then Cyprus in 2000. Mr Haider's family believed his death in Cyprus last year was the result of a quad motorbike accident. But following an autopsy on Mr Haider's body, conducted by his brother, Dr Tedo Haider, from Batlow, New South Wales, the family now believe he was murdered. His neck had been broken and his aorta split, and there were signs of a struggle. Mr Haider left his children, Saad and Seema, in Australia when he moved to London in 1985, but now they want justice and access to his estate. Saad Haider, 23, said he never knew his father, but wanted to find out the truth. His family believe Iranian agents paid Cypriot police to eliminate Mr Haider because he knew too much. Dr Haider has asked Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Attorney General Philip Ruddock to intervene. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation has a file on the case and the Australian Federal Police have been investigating in Cyprus. Dr Haider and the two children have visited Cyprus several times, but said they were stonewalled and threatened. Iran revealed last year that it had a clandestine nuclear program, raising fears it wanted to build nuclear bombs. The Russian Kh-55 missile that Mr Haider is alleged to have sold to Iran has a 200 kiloton nuclear warhead and can travel 3000km. Letters written by Hrihoriy Omelchenko, an intelligence colonel to Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko, give details of the arms deal. The letters also claim Mr Haider was part of an arms trafficking gang that sold six Kh-55 missiles to China. Ukraine handed most of its nuclear weapons to Russia in 1992 and 1996, but it is estimated that $40 billion in weapons was illegally traded during the 1990s. Based on documents he had seen in Cyprus, Dr Haider said he had "little doubt" the missiles were tipped with warheads. "What's the use of the missiles without them," Dr Haider said. The missiles were sold through several companies, including one Cyprus-based company owned by Mr Haider, S.H. Heritage Holding Ltd, and another Iranian firm, Satak Co Ltd. Dr Haider said the arms deal was worth $10.1 billion. Up to $12.6 million is missing from Mr Haider's accounts and there are doubts about the fate of his properties in Cyprus. At the heart of the mystery is the role of Mr Haider's mistress and her family, who are allegedly linked to the Russian mafia. Valery Malev, a member of the gang, who was based in Kiev, died in mysterious circumstances in 2002. Three of the gang's members were arrested after an investigation began last year.
