his was in response to the following comments from Nyatsimba:

"Why are you, a Ghanaian going around Washington DC giving seminars on Zimbabwe? You are not Zimbabwean and have no clue on our country. Good or bad! Leave Zimbabwe alone!"

What is George Ayittey saying here by implication?

Val Ojo

The implication is simply... George apparently knows more about Zimbabwe then  Citizens of Zimbabwe ..Now what  is the source of this his knowledge ?.... none other then New York Times, Washington Post ,  The Knight Rider ,  New Africa Magazine, Washington Times, The London Observer ..e.t.c.

One thing is for certain, Zimbabweans  have lived under  tremendous oppression during the reign  of  Racist  Ian Smith's Regime in the then Rodesia.  People have very verey  deep feelings in their hearts..Nobody repeat nobody can erase that not even Ayittey.

Similarly , Ugandans, especially Northern and Eastern Ugandans,  under Dictator Yoweri Museveni  have gone through tremendous suffering during  Yoweri Museveni's  19 years in power.  If and when Museveni goes ( and it is just a matter of time) the people of  Uganda  who have experienced this tremendous suffering under the American and British Stooge  Yoweri Museveni , are going to hold the American and the British Government  partly responsible for their suffering ..after all it was the American  Government and that of the British who offered unwaivering support to their oppressor Yoweri Museveni... Another Ayittey will preach until thy Kingdom come  about American or British values ...and guess what ..that is not going to cut it! We are pretty much tired of you people duping us!!!

I wonder what your thoughts are on this particular statement?

Nyatsimba later modified the above statement to include people who may have practical familiarity with the land or subject matter through having lived there, visiting the country on a regular basis, and equally important, readiness to listen to all parties represented in the country.

A mere crusade based on information acquired through second and third parties whose sole objective is to unseat a government or ruler that you do not like does not, ordinarily, qualify as having expertise on or about a country, and thus the right to lecture with authority  on the said country, even when educated and informed citizens of that country are openly criticizing your purported expertise.

The second point was a question that I will answer with a question, and a quote:

And by the way, did George announce himself an expert on Zimbabwe?

When George Ayittey makes the following statement:

Nyatsimba,

You are funny. Why don't you also become an "EXPERT" on Zimbabwe, going
around giving speeches? If what you say makes sense, people will PAY to
hear it. Why don't you?

Or why don't you become an expert on Ghana or Nigeria?

George Ayittey

This was in response to the following comments from Nyatsimba:

"Why are you, a Ghanaian going around Washington DC giving seminars on Zimbabwe? You are not Zimbabwean and have no clue on our country. Good or bad! Leave Zimbabwe alone!"

What is George Ayittey saying here by implication?

The above from Nyatsimba is what I objected to, and I wonder what your thoughts are
on this particular statement?

I would be much more comfortable discussing the content of George's seminar talks
than trying to define who is an expert? And by the way, did George announce himself an
expert on Zimbabwe?

My persuasion is to analyse a problem holistically, so that it is properly underst ood from
all angles. The debate about Africa's condition is a complex continuum and many so
called  "experts" simply follow their persuasion(s) and focus on some aspect of this
continuum.
