Security men arrest FDC T-shirts supplier

By Kabona Esiara

KAMPALA Security personnel yesterday raided the premises where the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party prints its T-shirts and arrested a businesswoman contracted to produce them.

Eight security men in plainclothes picked Ms Peggy Ntegyereize, 47, in Bunga, a Kampala suburb, yesterday morning.
They cordoned off Choice Health Club, where she prints the T-Shirts, from 10 a.m. to noon. No person was allowed to leave or enter the place during the time of the search.

After the search, the security agents drove Ntegyereize towards the city in a Mark II saloon car, Reg. No UAB 273B.
Eyewitnesses said the security men also confiscated her passport, FDC letterheads, a letter from exiled party chairman Kizza Besigye authorising her to run his businesses in Kampala.

Besigye, who was a presidential candidate in 2001, fled to exile in South Africa in August of that year citing harassment and intimidation from government security agencies.

Several people associated with Besigye have been arrested over the years, some on allegations of working for the rebel People's Redemption Army. The government says Besigye, a retired colonel, is behind the DR Congo-based rebel group.

During yesterday's operation, the security agents searched the sauna, bar, Ntegyereize's lodgings, which are in the same place, and about four neighbouring houses. The businesswoman owns the houses.
The operatives, reportedly from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, chased away this reporter and his photographer amid protests from Ntegyereize.

"Who tipped you that we were carrying out this operation here? Go out. Go out," one of the men barked at the Sunday Monitor journalists.
"They were searching for guns, army uniforms and documents saying I am a rebel collaborator," she said shortly after her release at about 3 p.m.
Ntegyereize said she was freed after recording a statement at the Criminal Investigations Directorate headquarters.

Mr Edison Mbiringi, the CID officer in charge of serious crime, denied knowledge of the arrest. Ntegyereize suspects she was arrested because she supports FDC and that the move was aimed at intimidating her.

"Government has never declared Besigye a rebel, therefore I see no reason why I should not deal with him," Ntegyereize said. "This is intimidation. People in government don't want me do business because I support FDC. But they are hardening me - and no amount of intimidation will change me."
