However, the 501 brigade commander, Maj. Victor Twesigye, said that only nine people had been abducted.  Citizens..the fact is that  NRM is simply trying to down play , perhaps for political and or strategic military reasons the number of those  Ugandans abducted by the so called "kony" rebels. This is intended to accomplish two objective a)  To somehow Impress Ugandans and members of the Internatioanl Community that somehow the UPDF is still a force which can protect it's citizens... the contrary is true.! b) as a propaganda gimmick!  as simply as that..the fact is that some force here in reffered to us "LRA rebels"  has abducted some 50 people! right under the nose of the UPDF..the best the UPDF can do is argue over figures about the number of those abducted!!!!..Like Steve Biko once stated...".black man you are on your own"

KAMPALA - The Lords Resistance Army rebels havde reportedly abducted some 50 children in Apac District in what looks like a fresh escalation in the long running conflict in northern Uganda.

The abduction, which if the numbers are confirmed will be the biggest in at least a year, occurred on Thursday night in Minakulu, about 30km on the Gulu-Kampala highway.

The army spokesman in the region, Lt. Kiconco Tabaro said the army had on Friday rescued 10 children.
He said he did not know how many people were abducted. "There was a clash on Thursday night but we managed to repulse them. We killed seven rebels and rescued 10 children," he said. However, a local councillor in Minakulu, Mr Vincent Oling said: over 40 people were abducted but 5 had returned".

A humanitarian worker based in the area who asked not to be named said:
"The report we have got from a security source in the area indicates that up to 49 children were abducted and other details are still scanty, but we want to visit the area on Saturday morning to assess the situation."
Apac woman MP Betty Amongi said that on Wednesday another 25 people were abducted from Ngora in Aber Sub-county. She added that they are still unaccounted for. However, the 501 brigade commander, Maj. Victor Twesigye, said that only nine people had been abducted.
