Hundreds of supporters of President Yoweri Museveni today demonstrated outside the British High Commission demanding to see the High Commissioner, over meddling in Ugandan politics.

Carrying placards denouncing the British government, the demonstrators who said they want President Museveni to remain in power after the expiry of his current term in 2006, said they wanted to express their disgust at the British government's increased interference in the internal affairs of Uganda.

"The British should stop thinking that they can decide for Africans," said Dr Kim Mutokambali, chairman of the little-known Movement Cadres Forum, organisers of the demonstration

He said: "We can agree with donors when it comes to aid, but that's where their interference should stop."

The demonstrators were not able to meet the High Commissioner, Mr Adam Wood who was said to be on leave, but gave a statement to the head of security at the Commission.

Work at the Commission was affected for about 30 minutes as demonstrators made noise at the commission offices along Parliament Avenue.

The statement contained a warning to British singer, Bob Geldof to stop his anti-Museveni crusade, saying President Museveni was a freedom fighter, not a comedian.

The statement also warned the British Parliament to stop debating the Uganda third term issue. In February the British parliament debated political developments in Uganda, with special attention on the move to amend the Constitution.

Geldof has been target of angry comments of supporters of President Museveni following his remarks at the launch of the Commission for Africa last month where he said Mr Museveni wanted to become life president. He advised the president against amending the Constitution.

Mr Museveni has been in power since 1986, ruling for 10 years un-elected. In 1996 he organised the elections which he won and did the same in 2001.

His term expires in 2006 and under the 1995 constitution he is not supposed to stand, however parliament has started debating a Bill that is aimed at amending the Constitution, to lift presidential term limits.
