MPS on the finance committee have asked the government to submit to them an agreement that was signed with Rosa Whitaker to promote Uganda's image abroad, for scrutiny.

The directive came after finance state minister Isaac Musumba told the committee that the ministry wanted sh600m to pay Whitaker.

Musumba last month, while presenting a supplementary budget, also requested the committee for sh200m as additional funds required to settle outstanding contractual fees to the former assistant USA trade representative for Africa.

Whitaker, through her Washington-based Whitaker Group Consultancy, was contracted by the Government in 2002 to promote exports to the US market through the Africa Growth opportunities Act (AGOA).

The programme, in its third phase, was enacted in 2000 by the US government to allow duty-free importation of African goods, especially textile.

MP Aggrey Awori said, "I am suspicious about this Whitaker money. I have information that our US embassy is doing most of the selling yet you have continuously requested for that money."
