Obote's Akena Excites Lira

Business stalled in Lira on Monday as hundreds of enthusiastic residents poured into Kwania Road in the centre of the town to welcome the former first son Mr Jimmy Akena.
Akena, 37, is a son to former president Dr Milton Obote whose home village is in Akokoro, Lira. He returned to Uganda on April 14 from exile in Zambia where he had been living with his father.

He came with the Chairman of the Uganda People's Congress London Bureau, Mr Joseph Ochieno, and Stephen Miller, a former UPC undersecretary.
They came to prepare for Obote's impending return from exile and arrange a UPC Delegates Conference later this year.
Upon reaching Lira, Akena first attended a brief welcome service at St. Augustine Church of Uganda in the heart of the town.
He later led a procession to the UPC branch office at To Pe Yero House on Kwania Road.
The streets filled and traffic came to a standstill as jubilating UPC supporters streamed into the road.
For over an hour the supporters chanted UPC party slogans as they welcomed the former first son.
Ochieno, who spoke first, sent the crowds wild when he informed them that Obote would return home before September this year ahead of the UPC Delegates Conference.
"It is very likely that the president of the party, Dr Apollo Milton Obote, will be in Uganda before August or September," he said drawing ululations from a fired up crowd.
"This is no longer the Uganda we had more than 20 years ago," Ochieno said.
Dressed in a white T-shirt with UPC colours, Akena said he was excited at the big turn up.
"I am sure when the party president comes back, this will be nothing compared to what will happen then," he told cheering supporters.
The dread locked Akena added, "This hair is because of the massive sufferings." He said his father too had not cut his hair but would do so when peace returns to the country.

President Yoweri Museveni said recently that Obote was free to return to Uganda, but he would have to account for the atrocities committed in Luweero during his 1981-85 regime.
But Obote shot back, saying Museveni could not stop him from returning home.
