Kampala

Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has appealed to the government to address the concerns of donors that have forced Britain to withhold five million pounds, according to a report by the New Vision.

Britain recently withdrew its aid -worth $ 9.5 million or about UShs 16.5 billion- over Uganda's failure to make sufficient progress towards establishing a fair basis for a multiparty system of governance.

"When donors withhold aid from Uganda, it is the grassroots, the would-be beneficiaries, who suffer more than government officials. I appeal to our government to address the donors' concerns for the good of Ugandans," he told the media at his Rubaga residence in Kampala on Tuesday, May 3, 2005.

The Cardinal had just returned after three weeks in the Vatican for the burial of the late Pope John Paul II and the election of his successor, Pope Benedict XVI.
