The Iteso-Jopadhola wrangle over a new Tororo district is degenerating into violence.

The Iteso in Tororo want their own district to be separate from the Jopadhola.

The government has appointed a commission to investigate the justification for a new district.

Reports from Tororo say the Iteso have deployed vigilantes to identify witnesses who appear before the commission to oppose the proposal.

The Jopadhola allege the vigilantes were sent to different sub-counties, where the commission visits, to identify and discipline individuals whose testimony is against a new district.

"l have been among the victims of their misconduct," Oburu said. Oburu says that on May 2, 2005 two members of Iteso brigade attacked him in Merikiti sub-county and grabbed from him a memorandum he was taking to the commission and beat him up for sabotaging their demands.
