Casting delayed by lack of voters to witness box opening

VOTING in Wakiso district failed to kick off at 7:00am as there were no voters to witness the opening of the ballot boxes, reports Catherine Ntabadde.

Presiding officers in nine polling stations said they needed five voters to witnesses the opening of the ballot boxes.

The officers said voters arrived at the stations after 8:00am.

“We were supposed to start at 7:00am but there was no one by that time. The witnesses have to check the ballot boxes and see that there is nothing. We got witnesses at 8:00am,” Majid Kukulakwetta, the presiding officer of Nansana East (A-M), said.

There was a low turn up in the polling stations of Kisimbiri B (N-Z), Kisimbiri B (A-M), Mpunga Ward E in Wakiso Town Council, Buyera-Gayaza-Namasaga in Wakiso sub-county, Nansana East 2, Nansana East AB (N-Z), Nansana East (A-M), Nansana West (N-Z) and Nansana West 2B in Nabweru sub-county.

By 11:00am, each of the nine polling stations had registered
less than 50 voters.

The exercise was further disrupted by a downpour at around 2:30pm.
Patrick Nsubuga, a councillor in Nansana parish, said members of the opposition were stopping residents from voting.

Lira officer faces arrest over voting

THE Police in Lira have summoned the district secretary for security on suspicion of campaigning against the referendum, reports Ali Mao and James Oloch.

The district Police chief, Taire Idh-wege, said Tonny Ogwang Adwari went around telling people not to vote. Ogwany, however, denied the allegation. “I am going to make a statement but it will be brief because I am not a criminal,” he said.

The district registrar, Dennis Ebong, said the general turn-up in Lira municipality was very poor because many voters were not fully sensitised about the exercise.

Low turn-up excites Njuba (and Ssemakula in USA)

By Josephine Maseruka

THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) national coordinator, Sam Njuba, was the happiest man yesterday following a poor turn-up in the referendum.

“Although I did not vote, I am the happiest man. At some stations, the turn-up was near zero,” he said. “As FDC, we resolved that we should not be party to Museveni’s political gimmick, sham and fraud and the results of the referendum are self explanatory,” he said.

The New Vision caught up with Njuba as he drove towards Entebbe.
He said, “We left the mediocre parties backed by Museveni to participate in the fraud exercise and in his political gimmick.”

Meanwhile, in Nangabo sub-county where Njuba hails from, a number of voters with registration cards had their names missing in the voters’ register.
