FOUR primary schools and a health centre have closed in Lotome village in Moroto district after the army cordoned off the area following the killing of their six colleagues during fighting between them and armed Karimojong last week.
Three soldiers were wounded during the clash.
The schools are Lotome Boys, Lotome Girls, Lomuno and Lokengel and Lotome Health Centre.
The 3rd Division Army Spokesman, Lt. Gabriel Lomongin, said the area would remain sealed off until the culprits who killed the soldiers are apprehended. "The people there are responsible for the cordon because they know the culprits, but don't want to hand them in. We shall continue doing so until the culprits are brought to book," Lomongin said.
He said the measure is to discourage warriors from being confrontational.
The LC5 councillor for Lotome sub-county, Mr Joseph Eru, said the schools and health centre are no longer operational.
"The UPDF has denied people access to their homes, the schools have closed and other people have sought refuge in neighbouring Moroto town, Kangole and others have run to Nakapiripirit," Eru told Daily Monitor by telephone from Moroto town on Monday.
"The medical personnel have deserted the health centre and that lead to death of two children," a source said.

There have been several killings of soldiers by Karimojong warriors in various incidents in Karamoja in the recent past.
Last month Karimojong warriors killed seven soldiers in fierce fighting in Nakapiripirit district.
