Kibaki off to US as 51 stranded
Story by SUNDAY NATION
Correspondents
Publication Date: 09/11/2005 President Mwai Kibaki left the country for New York
through London
yesterday morning. He used a Kenya Airways commercial flight following
the grounding of
his plane for routine maintenance. The plane carrying the President and his entourage took off from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a few minutes to noon. The plane left behind 51 passengers who were
supposed to connect to
London from Dar-es-salaam (12) and Entebbe (39). The Entebbe flight arrived at 11:05am. It was
scheduled to arrive at
10:50am while the time indicated for boarding the connecting flight was 11:35am. The passengers were booked at Panari Hotel to await
another flight
last night. The airline's marketing and corporate
communications manager Mr
Michael Okwiri confirmed that the 51 passengers had been left behind and were issued with boarding passes for the earliest flight to London (11pm last night). The planes from the two destinations, he said,
arrived late than
scheduled making it difficult for the passengers to go through the security checks before the scheduled time for take off. Besides, the plane had to taxi to the Presidential
pavilion to pick up
President Kibaki and his team. He said: "We understand their frustration. It is
standard practice not
to delay flights in the event connecting flights are late. We accommodate the passengers and put them on the earliest flight to the same destination." He denied that the 51 passengers were deliberately
left behind to
create room for the presidential entourage. The Boeing 777 that operates the London route has a
capacity of 322
passengers but left JKIA with 226 passengers, he said. The President is in the US to attend this year's
World Millennium
Development Summit and the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Assembly. The meeting is expected to review progress made by
governments to
reduce poverty in their countries. The Mulindwas Communication Group
