THE Government should devote more resources to the wellbeing of internally displaced people (IDPs) and solve the conflict in the north to enable the IDPs to return to their villages, the Netherlands ambassador has said.
Yoka Brandt said the first responsibility for the welfare of IDPs lies with the Government.
Speaking at a ceremony the World Food Programme (WFP) organised to thank the Netherlands government for US$3m (about sh5.5b) given to support WFP relief and recovery operations in northern Uganda, Karamoja and other food-insecure areas, Brandt said, "Whereas the southern part of Uganda is doing relatively well, the north is still in a dire state.
"The situation will only improve if people can return to their villages."
Brandt said it was sad to see that the situation of IDPs was still lamentable, despite aid agency involvement.
"The window for talks is still there," Brandt said.
The first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Disaster Preparedness, who was also chief guest at the ceremony held at the Agency's ware houses at Nalukolongo- Kampala, Moses Ali, said the Government contributed indirectly to the welfare of the displaced.
