Ugandan-born Canadian Senator Mobina Jaffer has urged Ugandan-Canadians to write to the Prime Minister, Paul Martin, and ask him to address the plight of women and children in northern Uganda.

Jaffer, Canada's special envoy for the peace process in Sudan (Darfur), made the remarks on Saturday in Toronto in a speech on opportunities and challenges in the democratisation of Ugandan civil society, at a fundraising dinner organised by Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

About 193 people, including MPs Salaamu Musumba and Ogenga Latigo and FDC chief mobiliser Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, attended the dinner. Also in attendance was Ruby Dhalla, a Canadian MP.

About 9,000 Canadian dollars (sh14m) was raised.

"The Prime Minister responded to the Sudan crisis because he received 623 letters from the public," said Jaffer, whose father, Bandali Jaffer, was an MP in Uganda in the 1960s.

Jaffer, whose work has taken her to northern Uganda said, "peace in Sudan means peace in northern Uganda. I have a duty to make sure my continent is served."

She said she was saddened by the plight of women and children in northern Uganda.
