Paymaster killed over army salaries
ALEX NSUBUGA
GULU

THE army on Sunday shot dead Pte Stanley Emega, an army paymaster, who attempted to flee with staff salaries of about Shs26 million.
The Northern Region Army spokesman, Capt. Paddy Ankunda, said Emega was shot dead at Ajur south of Gulu town in Nwoya sub-county after resisting arrest.

Emega, who was deployed to keep money for salaries for Aung army detach situated between Pakwach and Aluyo, disappeared with the cash when other soldiers broke off for lunch.

Ankunda said the army was holding three other suspects over the salaries.
The Defence and Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Shaban Bantariza, said Emega disappeared on Friday after paying Shs30 million of the Shs60 million meant for the soldiers' salaries for August.

“He had fled with the soldier's salaries but when he was located, he resisted arrest,” Bantariza said on Monday.
He said Shs17 million was recovered leaving a balance of Shs9 million, which the army suspects he had already used.

Bantariza said the incident demonstrates the need to use banks to pay salaries than cash.
“We must do all what it takes to bank people's money. Paying cash is very hazardous,” he said.
Several army paymasters have been reported to be disappearing with salaries.
