CMI arrests former UPDF major
ALEX B. ATUHAIRE
KAMPALA
The Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, on Saturday nig ht picked up a former top intelligence official from Ntinda, where he was having an evening out with his wife.
Maj. Peter Kashure, the former director of intelligence at CMI was picked up at 8pm. Kashure's wife Adrine told Daily Monitor on Saturday night, at their home in Bweyogerere, that her husband was picked by about eight plain clothed operatives, armed with AK-47 guns and whisked away in Toyota Corolla, Reg. No. UAD082V.
"Somebody called him up at about 4pm and said he wanted to meet him. The same person, later found us at Yakobo's Pu! b in Ntinda but came with people who said they were from CMI and had instructions to arrest him," Adrine said.
"Before they took him, he told me that the people who arrested him had instructions from the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima to arrest him or shoot him, if he resisted. It was such a terrifying moment," Adrine, who looked helpless, said.
Kashure was reportedly arraigned before the Chief of Military Intelligence, Col. Leopold Kyanda who questioned him for over three hours, before they returned him to his residence in Bweyogerere in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
Kashure's wife yesterday said her husband has been returned but said he couldn't talk to anybody, except family members.
Daily Monitor has failed to reach Col. Kyanda since Saturday night. The colonel's assistant who answered his (Kyanda) phone repeatedly said the colonel was attending meetings.
Kashure, also a former intelligence officer for the! UPDF 5th division in Pader, 2nd division in Mbarara and 317 brigade in Kitgum, is also a brother to UPDF senior officers, Maj. John Nuwagaba and Maj. Stephen Kashure.
Nuwagaba is a former director of political education in the UPDF while, Kashure is a directing staff at Senior Staff College, Kimaka.
Kashure retired from the army in 2001 after falling out with the former army commander, Maj. Gen. James Ka zini, but has never been issued with a retirement certificate.
In 2000, he wrote a minority report clearing the former director of records in the UPDF, Maj. Sabiiti Mutengesa but pinning top UPDF officers over allegations of creation of ghost soldiers in the army. Kazini, who was then Chief of Staff, had ordered the investigations.
Sources told Daily Monitor that Kyanda warned Kashure against "talking too much" in favour of Forum for Democratic Change leader, Dr Kizza Besigye. Adrine said, “My husband has said nothing about politics. This harass! ment is unfair.”
Besigye lost Thursday's polls to the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni by a percentage of 59 to 37.
