THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has said there might be some Interahamwe who entered Uganda, especially in Kibaale district.
"We ha ve been getting reports of the presence of Interahamwe in Kibaale district but it is now clear that these wrong characters could be within us," Kayihura told residents of Kiryenga sub-county in Kibaale district on Wednesday.
"I am afraid we might experience genocide like the one that happened in Rwanda in 1994 if the clashes are not handled with extra care," Kayihura warned.
The meeting followed tribal clashes where one person was killed, in which five others injured and over 20 houses set ablaze.
The clash also left a number of domestic animals killed and property destroyed.
The regional Police commander, western, Francis Tumushabe, said the situation was calm, adding that five people had been arrested.
He, however, refused to disclose the names of the suspects for security reasons, adding that more people would be arrested.
The residents said the cause of the violence was political and demanded the resignation of Kiryanga sub-county chairman John Baringa and Buyaga MP-elect Barnabas Tinkasimire.
Kayihura said Brig. Matayo Kyaligonza, the NRM western region vice-chairman, would be in the district today to settle the matter.

"If he fails to settle the matter, then President Yoweri Museveni will intervene," Kayihura said.
Scores of people have camped in trading centres and sub-county headquarters for safety.
