AUTHORITIES in Apac have given Bahima pastoralists in Lango five days to leave the district, accusing the herdsmen of fuelling insecurity in the area. The ultimatum was issued during a meeting chaired by the Apac district LC5 Chairman, Col. Charles Okello Engola at Awila trading centre on Saturday. The Bahima were given up to Thursday to leave the grazing areas.
About 500 elders and the Maruzi County MP, Mr David Ebong, attended the meeting. Mr Fred Rutatala, the leader of the herdsmen requested for more time. "We rented the land we are occupying from willing owners," he pleaded. "Please give us more time until our lease expires. Moving these animals is difficult and expensive."
But his prayer fell on deaf ears. "Lango no longer wants turmoil.I am not ready to lead a district that is insecure," Engola replied.
The herdsmen accused of degrading Lango land, through overgrazing and deforestation by indiscriminately cutting down trees for charcoal burning.
About 200 Bahima herdsmen recently migrated to Lango with an estimated 10,000 head of cattle, from Masindi district in search for water and pasture.
Landowners in Lango have since accused the herdsmen of illegally settling on their land.
