| "The promise of peace "....NAY wouldn't bet on it!! MK The promise of peace August 2006 After 20 years of war, peace is a real possibility for the people of northern Uganda. For the last month negotiations have been continuing between the rebel group, the LordÂ’s Resistance Army (LRA), and the Government of Uganda mediated by the Government of South Sudan. A peace deal could mean that the 1.8 million people currently living in cramped, unsanitary camps would be able to begin their lives again. It could also mean an end to child abductions by the LRA; 25,000 children have been kidnapped and forced to fight for the
rebel group since the war began. However the talks remain balanced on a knife-edge and if they fail, the human cost is likely to be high with a real risk that fighting could start again. |
