THE Bishop of the Northern Uganda Anglican Diocese, Nelson Onono Onweng, has
said internally displaced persons in the region fear leaving the camps because
they are not sure of the outcome of the peace talks that are taking place in
South Juba between the government and the LRA rebels.
"The IDPs are asking; if the Juba peace talks fail, shall we be safe in the
villages? The Bishop said. Others are wondering why they are being forced to
go back home yet the peace agreement has not yet been signed between the LRA
and the government." Onono made the remarks while opening a one-day review
workshop for the Information and Advocacy Unit of the diocese in Gulu.
He said the church and the government should address the IDPs' fears before
returning them to their homes. He said people in the villages would be
vulnerable to attacks by the rebels if the peace talks do not yield peace.
Relief and Disaster Preparedness Minister Tarsis Kabwegyere last month said
all IDP camps in northern Uganda would be dismantled and emptied by December 31
as a way of making the residents go back to their homes.
