To UNAA -Prt 11

If I knew an expression better than "Thank you" I would apply it. I thank
UNAA for giving me the opportunity to introduce Ugandans in the Diaspora and at
home to the new Northern Uganda through my family, the family of Rwot Lacito
Okech, for which I am a fourth generation. Rwot Lacito Okec was one of the
first Northerners to learn and speak English. He was an interpreter for the
British during the early colonials days.

How excellent of an English speaker was Rwot Lacito Okec? As I shared with
the audience during the UNAA presidential debate, it was said that even the
chickens in his compound greeted each other in English! Rwot Lacito Okec's
first son, Mr. Julius Peter Abe, was a teacher in Gulu High School where he
taught the late Dr. Milton Obote who became Uganda's first post-independent
prime minister, then president overthrown by Idi Amin in 1971. Gulu High School
was the first junior high school built by the first Anglican missionaries in
Northern Uganda.

Understanding the history of the family of Rwot Lacito Okech is also
understanding the future for, not just Acholi, but our brand new beloved
Northern Uganda.

Once again, thank you UNAA for giving me the opportunity to introduce the New
Northern Uganda to Ugandans in the Diaspora and at home.

The Great Granddaughter of Rwot Lacito Okec-Madam President
