IN SUMMARY

Israeli ambassador to Kenya says Uganda is high on their priority list of
places they intend to open embassies.

Kampala

The Israelites could soon reopen their embassy in Uganda, 41 years after it
was closed by then president Idi Amin. This was revealed by the Israeli
ambassador to Kenya, Mr Gil Haskel, during celebration to mark the country’s
65 years of independence.

During the function, held in Kampala at the end of last month, Mr Haskel
said: “It is true we had some downs in the 1970s, but Israel never left
Uganda. In our hearts we kept thinking about Uganda.”
“Although we cannot afford to have embassies all over the world because of
financial constraints, Uganda is high on our priority list and very soon we
shall reopen our embassy here.”

The ambassador’s comments were prompted by Ndorwa West MP David Bahati’s
request that “to make the Uganda-Israel relation more formal, the latter
should consider reopening their office in Kampala.” “Our President and other
officials visit Israel and come back praising the land. We need to make the
relationship official,” Mr Bahati said.

Mr Haskel said next year, they would renew their continued friendship with
the NRM government and use the opportunity to plan for the reopening of the
embassy. The celebrations were organised by the Ugandan Christian friends of
Israel.

Israel was one of the first countries to open an embassy in Uganda and many
Ugandan students have received training in Israel, especially in medicine
and engineering. Israelis also helped train Uganda’s infantry and air force.
Amin closed down the Israeli Embassy in Uganda and severed all diplomatic
relations with Israel.
