Rellinger NORTHUMBERLAND -- Police chasing a stolen vehicle on Hwy. 401 across Northumberland County found themselves arresting a 12-year-old boy behind the wheel. In my 25 years of policing, I dont think Ive ever come across something like this, said Northumberland County OPP Constable Steve Bates. On Sunday, April 13, the Northumberland County OPP were notified of a stolen vehicle from Toronto suspected to be travelling through the area. At 6 p.m., a Quinte West-area gas station reported a gas theft with a description of the suspect vehicle matching the stolen vehicles description, police said. OPP officers spotted the suspect vehicle on Hwy. 401 in Port Hope and attempted to pull it over. Police were able to stop the vehicle on County Road 2 near Newtonville in Clarington at around 7 p.m. where they arrested the driver, who was its lone occupant. Police had set up a roadblock and laid down a spikebelt, but the suspect vehicle stopped prior to driving over the belt. No injuries were reported and the driver of the car was arrested, without incident by police. Const. Bates said its extremely rare in Northumberland County for police to arrest a 12-year-old child for driving. A Toronto boy is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and breach of recognizance. The boy cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He was held for bail hearing in Cobourg on April 14.
