In 1985 Acholi overthrew a Lango government headed by the late Dr. Apollo
Milton Obote. In that coup it was alleged that Olara Otunnu was one of the
masterminds. It has taken more than 2 decades for Langi to pay back. This
week, MP Jimmy Akena the late Obote's son managed to successfully launch his
own coup against an Acholi President heading UPC. What is similar in both
situations is that the Acholi government did not last, and Akena's
Presidency of UPC is dead on arrival. In fact he is presiding over a party
that died in 1985. What Akena is doing is what Baganda call "Okwabya
olumbe". However Akena can get some comfort in knowing that Uganda does not
have political parties. What Ugandans consider to be political parties are
actually a club of thugs. In other words a group of warlords. What is sad
however, is that these thugs keep recycling themselves. They are renewable
resources. Had Okot P'bitek not died, he would have named all of them
"Political malayas". Prostituting from one "kasisira" to another. They have
also turned Uganda into a land of squatters. Some have become gypsies and
destitute par excellence in their own country. Shamelessly, the so-called
Ugandan elites who should know better are lining up behind the same thugs
after Museveni is gone as their leaders. And when you question the wisdom
behind replacing one thief with another they throw every insult at you.
The trend our country is taking must become a major concern to every
intelligent Ugandan left out there.
