Omukyala Mayimuna K.
Talking to George Okello particularly about Nubians is like talking to a piece
of dead wood in the jungles of Akokoro. George Okello is following the policy
established by anti-Amin in Tanzania in 1971 which declared Nubians as enemies
of the State, following the January coup of the same year. Obote 1 government
was never expected to be driven to exile particularly by Amin, a man considered
as Nubian, uneducated and inferior. The Okellos of yesteryear considered anyone
joining the army was an inferior and lacked the intellectual capacity to reason
which is very surprising considering that almost 90% of the original Uganda
army was composed of Acholi and Langi dating back to the late Brigadier Okoya
to Pangarasiyo Onek, who stayed with Amin till the Tanzania-Uganda war of
1979. When I started the Acholi series on violence, I was called all names
even receiving death threats, as well as being thrown into jail for talking
about the obvious, and yet the Okellos declared Nubians as the worst people in
Uganda's history, referring to them as aliens from South Sudan and came very
close to declaring West Nile a national park. The Ombaci massacre was carried
out along that line. Langi and Acholi wanted to drive every West Niler out of
the region. In their mind regardless of the various ethnic groups was a Nubian
who had no reason and right to live in Uganda. They wanted to get rid of the
people and hand them over of Nuimery then the President of Sudan. Because of
their vicious propaganda the international community agreed with them to the
point of refusing to provide aid to the refugees leaving every responsibility
to the Sudanese government since those were its returning citizen.
It look an Oxford scholar to put some sense into the international community
making it aware that those were not returning Sudanese but Ugandans even though
there were some pockets of Sudanese who had lived in Uganda for decades fleeing
the Anyanya war (1955-1972) that ended with the Addis Ababa Accord headed by
Abel Alyer and Major General Isaac Lagu in 1972. Because of this anti-West Nile
established in Tanzania, the people of West Nile have largely stayed away from
post Amin Uganda politics. The political drama since 1979 has been played by
Museveni faction and the Acholi cable which has failed to learn anything from
the turbulent history of Uganda since 1964, starting with the Nakulabye
massacre and leading to the 1966 crisis.
As I have said many times, even though Abbey Semuwemba claims that UAH was
started to bring Ugandans together to find a common ground and establish an
environment in which we can co-exist as people of one nation, this forum has
done the opposite promoting malice, insult and ruining people's reputation. It
is shocking when people like Akim claim that UAH is the best thing that has
ever happened to Uganda--give me a break please. To crown this baseless claim,
Abbey has followed suite by declaring that he would like to leave UAH as a
legacy for Uganda. Unless the meaning of the word legacy has been changed in
the dictionary of late, I fail to understand how an organization that is 100%
malicious can become a legacy. I guess a figment of imagination some time works
in people's head. As an advice mukyala Mayimuna leave George Okello to wallow
in his hatred of the Nubians alone. As long as UAH gives him the space to
display his negative behavior, nothing you can do about it. The only good news
is that he lacks the ability to kill you as they did in Ombaci. You and him
will never probably cross the same path even though the incidence of history
still exists.
It is sad that men like Abbey Semuwemba lucks a very basic understanding of
Uganda’s history, or rather just ignore it.

Your rumblings about Nubians are not worth commenting on. Your hatred of
Nubians is legendary

Frank Mujabi,
The Nubians had a Kingdom covering much of North Africa, until it was over-run
and conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Thats when much of northern Africa got
converted to Islam. But they still retain much of their African culture and
traditions, although there is still a very serious clash within Nubian society
about who exactly they are. Politically, they have not been able to handle well
challenges such as forced assimilation into Arab culture, which came along
with Islam. In Sudan, some identify themselves Arab, but increasingly there is
now a huge rejection of Arab culture amongst most Nubians. I saw this myself
when I visited the Nuba Mountains two years ago. There is in fact a huge
revivalism of Nubian identity and culture, actually very vibrant in the
diaspora in countries like Canada where Mayimuna lives, and in Nairobi where
there are activists trying to build up the political capacity of the Nubian
community in Kenya, which is still very marginalised and voiceless.

My Nubian friend, a Kenyan, tagged me into this group photo taken in Nairobi.
Is it not wonderful seeing Nubian people very proud of themselves and their
culture?
