If you've built the UIMA distribution you may have noticed lots of

Here is an articlethat discusses the issue:
http://www.itworld.com/nl/unix_insider/07242003/. Apparently some
versions of tar won't be able to extract our archive.
It works fine on a Linux box with GNU tar 1.13.25. However it failed
to extract when I tried it from cygwin, even though it has a newer
version of GNU tar, 1.16. The error I got is:
tar: A lone zero block at 86945. I actually don't know if this is
related to the long file name problem. In both cases I'm using gnu
tar so I'm not sure why there would be a problem.
I'm not sure how significant this is or what can be done about it.

Aix out of the box ships with a version of tar that can't handle these
files, either. I guess we should document the issue and tell people to
use the zip version if they have problems. There are unzip tools for
every platform nowadays.
