I am not enthusiastic about this news but this is a court order and the UK is not a banana republic.
Since the day cleanfeed was announced, it was easy to predict that one day cleanfeed like systems would be used for doing more than "saving the children". I always thought that one day people would realise that copyright holders and ISPs are in the same business : Distribution. We are competitors ! The internet allows everyone to distribute everything for marginal costs, this clashes with the Creative Industries distribution monopoly. Note that most "creations" are financed by the Distribution (TV network, Majors, ...). As long as all legal purchases are not as simple as an impulse buy on itunes, we will see piracy. [1][2] Give customers want they want at a price they can afford and this will just go away. Apple's App Store is a clear demonstration of this business model. We can only do so much to force the creative industry to adapt, what we must do is make sure is that they do not destroy ours. What it shows is that our industry lobbying is totally underfunded. We should be thinking about doing something if we do not want the internet to become a French Minitel. Lobbies are stopped by other lobbies. Time to lobby ....
