doesn't your server have IPMI with internal serial adaptor over the network?
I've used this very successfully on some relatively basic servers with atom processors, and can remote control grub and see the linux boot phase the only gotcha is if you bond eth0 and eth1 then the bouncing around of eth1 which is coupled with IPMI causes the serial over lan session to cut out.
