I have been considering this for my own home recently.

I was very happily using a Juniper SRX 110 with VDSL/FTTC for a number of
years. But now that Virgin Media FTTH is available in my area, I couldn't
resist ordering. So I had the problem of deciding what to replace the
router with, after discovering that the SRX didn't really cut it with the
features I needed (L2TP to AAISP) or speed.

I started looking around for a replacement and in the end bought a PC
Engines APU2 in a Rackmount case from LinITX. A bit of googling showed
that it should be able to achieve over 900 Mbps for basic routing.

It came pre-installed with pfSense, but being an x86 based machine, there
are a lot different options available and I haven't decided what to choose
yet.

Yes, it isn't a 'proper' router - but you get a lot of features and
performance for your money with x86 hardware.
