There were still a couple of SGI boxes running Homepages when I was there. I believe the history (before my time) was that Irix was chosen because it had a firewall trick so you could configure the box to accept TCP connections for a whole CIDR block with negligible configuration. (IPfilter and others couldn't do this.) Later on Homepages grew a tier of front end reverse proxy caches running Squid on NetBSD and later FreeBSD, with a fun kernel hack to get a similar effect to the Irix firewall config.
