there are good reasons to keep RRs out of the forwarding path. For one thing, it simplifies policy management.
Bird is excellent for plain ipv4 / ipv6 RR functionality, if you don't need fancier features, e.g. ISIS, MPLS, advanced AFIs, ORR, etc.
