I just installed Solaris 8 (sparc) and cannot connect to the internet. I verified that in.named is running. I get a weird message in /var/adm/messages (after the system comes up) saying the following:

Well, this ain't a Solaris list, but what the hell.

guidedog /usr/lib/snmp/snmpdx: [ID 512012 daemon.error] unable to get my IP address: gethostbyname(guidedog) failed [h_errno: try again(2)]

On solaris, if the machine has a static IP it is obtained by reverse mapping the hostname. That means you need to have an entry in /etc/hosts that maps your hostname to your real IP (not 127.0.0.1). The installer should not have left you in this state; did you change the /etc/hostname* and/or /etc/hosts files after installing? Is /etc/nsswitch.conf OK?
