The last line of my syslog.conf is:
*.debug                                                 /dev/tty12

Leave your laptop on TTY 12 when you're not using it, and take a look at it.

Does it stay frozen, or does it wake up?

Do you have the magic SysRq key turned on (kernel config, Kernel Hacking)?
