First, I know Mandrake 8.1 is ancient history. My (mis-) adventures upgrading to something newer are for another thread on another day. (The short reason is that I cannot get software I absolutely need to use to work under more modern Linuxes.)

The smoldering, if not actually burning, issue right now is whether it's possible to access a USB port under Mandrake 8.1, and how one goes about it. The ability to mount and read from (but not write to) a flash memory stick would simplify my life quite a bit.

There is a directory /dev/usb with permissions drwxr-xr-x owned by root (who else?). This directory is empty. The string "usb" does not appear anywhere in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab.

The hardware, though not new, is modern enough to have a USB port.

        Thanks for any guidance.
