there's a really neat application, using user-space kernel code, that
allows you to mount a remote filesystem using ssh.  Look for sshfs with
fuse.  One link is

Although I really liked it when i used it, in practice I don't 
really wind up using it anymore, and just have my own shortcuts to sync
between the roaming laptop and fixed work machines...
