Any lossless file format would be fine, as it compresses the original
ripped WAV file instead of discarding data. You won't get the small
file size of MP3s, but they'll be original quality. I use Exact Audio
Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) under WINE using the FLAC codec
(http://flac.sourceforge.net/) to rip all my CDs (though most Linux CD
rippers such as SoundJuicer will do FLAC if you don't like the idea of
Windows programs). You can then transcode the FLAC files to any lossy
format at a later date and it will be as if you ripped to that format
directly. I personally use flac2mp3 to synchronize directory
structures (http://robinbowes.com/projects/flac2mp3).

Let me know if you have any questions, as I've been working on
organizing my music collection this winter break :-)
