I also throw my FLAC hat into the ring. It only reduces size by about 50% at best, but it is pristine. In fact, depending on what software you use, you can also rip to FLAC and include a file that indexes the original CD. That way, if you ever want to make an exact duplicate of the original, you have all the information to do so.

Since we are on the topic of music, if you are an audiophile and you want
to store the most accurate copy of a music source then in what file format
should you save the copy?  I'm wondering what base format I should store
all my music files in, so I can convert to any lesser file format at a
