Just for the sake of completeness, I'll mention another type of installer I have run into.
NSIS -- Nullsoft (SuperPiMP|Scriptable) Install System. It is an open source installer that a number of open source/grass roots sort of folks are using. Homepage: http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/ Programs/people that use NSIS: http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/users.html --------------------------------------------- I ran across this working to script gvim 6.1 (gvim61.exe self installer). After a bit of perusing you'll find a /s (or /S or /silent -- it is never made clear) option for "silent" install that can be given on the command line. The workings of this switch is completely up to the people who setup the installer for whatever they are trying to distribute. As could be expected, it was anything but silent; so far I have not been able to find a way to change anything away from the defaults when using the "silent" option, either. (BTW, I had to use "/S", not "/s"). I will likely end up creating a manual "copy-files-around script" since the install for gvim is fairly simple anyways. The only tricky part should be the creation of the shell shortcut "edit with gvim". As for NSIS it is just going to be up to the people who package the software with it. If they think ahead of time about the possibility of a silent install then it will work and if not it probably will not work. Let me know if anyone has had success with this.
