I'm a little nervous about a solution like this, running a relatively
unknown Windows executable.

If I download them, is there a script that just installs the updates one
by one? I was able to do this with most of the Office updates. I
haven't been able to get the switches correct for the Windows updates
though, and I've been getting a 246 error.

RyanVM! http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn. I've integrated the packages he
provides in the xpsp2 slipstreamed i386 and used the results to
unattended image several machines. Works like a charm.
