The Windows XP with dell ships with their PCs already has an
unattended.txt file with a Product key already entered. The media
essentially requires an OEM license key. There are different kinds of
license keys for use with windows:

Volume License
OEM
Retail
and I think maybe System Builder

Dell's version of windows has some customized files (OEMBIOS.*) that look
at your hardware to make sure that you are actually running a DELL
computer. If you are, then it uses the ProductKey in unattended.txt and
doesn't ask for activation.

You can change the type of license key that is required by playing with
the values in the SETUPP.INI file in the i386 folder. Do a web search for
that filename, and you will find a lot more info.

Subject
[Unattended] Using Dell OEM install media as source of OS install files

My organization uses Dell machines heavily and since we are a public
research institution with international researchers going in and out every
day, we are constantly doing re-installs. We use the dell installation
media because it's quick and simple and does not require your to input the
cd key and you can reintall on a dell machine as many times as you like.
When I boot and install off the cd, it works fine. When I copy the files
on the cd into unattend and do the install using the cd key in
unattend.txt on the cd it tells me that the cd key is invalid. Is there
something up with Dell's cds that only allows you to use that key
specifically with that cd?
