Though I'm sorry for your frustration with "the program" Rhonda, I 
sympathize with you and am still snidely laughing at your description of the 
program police.  I'm glad you are brave enough to retain real teaching.  I 
love what Cathy wrote: "it's not about programs, it's about teachers." 
Since discovering comprehension strategies, then going through a few years 
of Houghton Mifflin where we were told to use it "with fidelity," my mantra 
has been (forgive the egotism): I AM THE PROGRAM.  The good news: I use less 
and less canned program every year and try for more and more thoughtful 
teaching.  The best news: the powers-that-be don't argue with decent test 
scores.
