I love your statement "I am the program". That is the best! We should be. We
have the education to support the decisions we make in the classrooms. I know
in my district the "program police" don't necessarily look at the best programs
for kids. I think you are quite ok to say that you are the program.

Though I'm sorry for your frustration with "the program" Rhonda, I
sympathize with you and am still snidely laughing at your description of the
program police. I'm glad you are brave enough to retain real teaching. I
love what Cathy wrote: "it's not about programs, it's about teachers."
Since discovering comprehension strategies, then going through a few years
of Houghton Mifflin where we were told to use it "with fidelity," my mantra
has been (forgive the egotism): I AM THE PROGRAM. The good news: I use less
and less canned program every year and try for more and more thoughtful
teaching. The best news: the powers-that-be don't argue with decent test
scores.
