When I read Ruby Bridges to my class and think aloud with my kiddos, they know
I am sharing my thinking, but they also know I am teaching them what strong
readers do when they read. When I share my questions, struggles, confusions,
and AHAs that I have had while reading my own personal texts, my kiddos
actually see me living the writerly/readerly life that I want them to have too.
They can actually see that it goes way beyond Ruby Bridges. Sometimes it
might be the confusing e-mail text, directions to a new technology device, or
new game instructions. All of those things that I share with them become
modeling. Of course the teaching happens too, but that's the bonus :-) I
see Think Aloud and Modeling as two seperate things (both part of my teaching
process).
