My husband, a middle school principal, was interviewing superintendent
candidates a few weeks ago. One candidate actually referred to the learners as
"products" several times during the interview.
About differentiation: it seems to me that all of the current buzz and
professional development RE differentiation lately has a lot to do with how
narrow and rigid and linear some of our instruction has become as it has
reflected "accountability" requirements and assessment (as well as philosophy).
If our instruction were appropriate to start with, we might not have to
introduce inauthentic "differences" for different kids. That is to say, open
enough, rigorous enough, and supportive enough to teach all children. A
workshop.
Western culture seems to be more product orientated, more linear, askingfor a
product.Other cultures are circular, never ending, always in motion,
processing. In so many ways I see teachers and education contributing to
thefrustration and confusion with kids that are not linear.
