Dear Friends -

I have a gift for each of you tonight. As I was responding to Jennifer's post,
I remembered Trina, one of my first graders probably twenty years ago. Think
of all she says about pragmatics, deep meaning, empathy and love. Trina was a
gentle, timid child of poverty and promise. Writing opened up a world to her
and I saw into her heart. Here's what she said one day when I was, oh so busy,
doing some oh, so important, thing. I almost didn't stop to hear.

"Mrs. Paul, what kind of mark do we use for a tear? You know, the kind that
rolls down your cheek?"

And we thought it had to do with punctuation. Bev
