My 1971 36 SS had a holding tank, and I'm pretty sure they were an option even as far back as then. I know that by 1976 it had to have been an option.
Mine was a 66-gallon(!) steel tank located in the hold under the salon, on the starboard side, just behind the galley. There's a pad there, flat, square, and framed, and it looks like it was done as part of the original layup of the boat. The tank sat on the pad and was screwed down. What makes me think it was original was that it was mild steel (same as the infamous gas tanks), and was painted like the gas tanks, too. What makes me think it wasn't original was the ridiculous plumbing connecting it to the head and deck fitting. In short, I can't tell whether it was original. Being made of steel, the tank had corroded through when I bought the boat. I can't even begin to describe to you just how nasty a job it was to unscrew it, tip it on its side, pull it out through the galley stairs hatch (had to remove the stairs), clean and jerk it up to the salon floor level, get it out the door to the cockpit, juggle it while stepping off the boat to the dock, get it down the dock, and heave it up into the back of my pickup. With a fist-sized hole in the side of it. While it was raining. My brother-in-law is a stainless steel welder. I'm going to see if he'll make me about a 30-gallon stainless tank. I'm never, ever going through that hassle again. For those of you with LectraSans, be careful. Some waters are no- discharge zones, which means no poo-poo goes overboard, even if it's been treated, or else big fines. All of Lake Washington and Lake Union in Seattle are. The entire Great Lakes are. There are others. And I've been advised by a marine sanitation specialist that putting LectraSan treated sewage into a holding tank is a very bad idea. The LectraSan kills most of the bacteria, but not quite all.
