I absolutely agree about the cooling setup. I have twin 454's with
5000 trannys that are new for this upcoming year. (I have removed
everythning in the boat to the bare fiberglass and am starting over).
The boat had twin 454's with 76C trannys and both are cooled with the
same design. Here is the raw and fresh water paths that I use. Just
a note, I used the old fresh water cooling components from the old
454's on the new set up and it differs from what is used now, but only
slightly.

Components in order of water flow

RAW Side
Ocean --> Seacock --> Strainer --> Raw Water Pump --> U-Cooler* -->
Heat X-Changer --> Risers --> Exhaust --> Ocean

Fresh Side
Heat X-Changer / Cooant Reservoir --> Block Pump --> Block -->
Thermostat --> E-Manifolds --> Heat X-Changer / Cooant Reservoir

*U-Cooler = This device cools both the tranny fluid and the engine
oil.

I have never measured the temperatures of the transmissions. The new
transmissions have temp senders built into them and a temp alarm
switch that is set at 190 F by the factory.

I have cooling diagrams available for 5 or 6 different types of
cooling arrangements if you are interested.

Thanks,

Victor
