thats what the problem was for sure...i used a cordless right angle
drill and loosed up the old packing with that...worked like a
charm...had no idea the packing would be that hard to remove, broke
the dentist pick trying to pull it out...boat is in the water and i
just wrapped a rag around the stuffing box to keep the flow
down...bilge pump only came on once...easy peasy
