Hello all. I have brought my ONAN 6.5 with Control O' Matic back to life. After a semi-total rebuild I am very pleased with its operation. The only thing I did not take apart was the heads and block as the compression on the engine when I got it was very good.
Here is my survey. I am contemplating developing a simple computer control for this unit and am wondering how many of these units are still out there. Most of the parts are impossible to find, especially the electrical ones in the Control 'O Matic. I can replace the entire control box with a very small PLC and keep tabs on the oil pressure, temps etc... Including the automatic operation and precise control of motor speed. The main reason I am thinking about this is that the block and mechanocal parts for this unit seem to be rock solid. It runs semi quiet and really for a 30+ year old generator to still be running is amazing. For a price I could reasonably sell the computer control and associated sensors etc for around $300.00. If any one out there is interested in this let me know. This would not include electronic ignition, but I would not think that would be more than $100.00.
